I setup Uniformserver as a test site at home for a phpbb3 message board, try all my mods here if they work upload to the online server. When using phpMyadmin to restore a 30 meg database it never completes and times out or I think it does the right frame of the screen goes all white or blank then when you refresh the screen only part of the tables are restored. When the restore is running very little CPU or memory is being used. Tried to use Bigdump it never completes either just stops on a page that says "Processing file: backup" the list the file name its processing. Cant understand why out of the box the tools for processing databases never seem to work and cant handle any large databases. Suggestions? I can restore the same databases on paid hosting servers so I know it can be done and assume its all just in settings? Thanks

Thanks again for the replies and ideas. the site would be for a small sort of private audience of like minded people but open to the web so if someone stumbled onto it they could join too, the traffic level would be low I doubt it would raise the attention of my ISP. The site would not be a business or used to make money or for providing other web services for others just a hobby thing. As I grow older and my body physically fails me and I can no longer do all my current hobbies I need to start dropping some hobbies but replace them with something else to occupy my time spending time on a hobby at home using a computer but still with my like minded friends kind of fits the program for me. Using a dedicated computer is not a problem, only installing the programs required to run the web server on a fresh clean install of Windows is not a problem, I can use my other computer and thanks to The Uniform Server do all the website development on it then after testing upload to the running server. Right now I am leaning towards Win 7 Home Ultimate but still looking for others suggestions so keep them coming. Thanks all

What windows operating system would you use for a home web server if you had your choice and why? Please I am looking for solid advice I am not taking a poll asking what your favorite operating system currently is, I am looking for the best windows OS to use for a home web server and why. If you want to give info on using a linux based system thats cool too I am just not use to using linux stuff I have played with Ubuntu for a few hours but thats about it I would not be opposed to running a linux based home server since once its running I would not be messing with it much. The box this server will run on would have the minimum amount of apps installed, and just be used for running the web server all the webpage work would be done on another machine then the files sent to the web server computer. As we all know all windows versions run fast as a fresh install then soon as you install one app performance and sometimes reliability goes down hill fast soon after so the plan would be to install the OS on a freshly formatted hard drive then all current MS updates installed, then install The Uniform Server no other apps would be installed unless required to support the web server, I would have to install a anti virus program so suggestions on one of them is welcome too. Sorry for all the dumb questions I am sure I can make this work on my own but would love to get other points of view on the subject if two heads are better than one imagine what all this sites users can come up with :-) Thanks in advance. FYI I ask these questions on this site because the advice I get has always been rock solid, not just advice for questions I have asked but from reading others post , currently you guys are 100% a big thanks for that.

Any advice on increasing performance once you have your Uniform Server setup on a Windows machine so it will run faster during operations like performing a backup or restore in myphpadmin with large databases like over 100 meg? Suggestions? As always thanks.

How do I make the server stop listing all the files under www if you just call up http://localhost/ or your ip address if your on the web. How can I force it to send say home.html if someone just typed in http://localhost/ in the browser? Thanks

Ok to delete user pma ? Thanks

Hi thanks for the replies. The site will be used to run phpbb3 message board. Regular html web pages. probably a photo album like Gallery3 or Coppermine. It will be running on a dedicated machine, XP all the latest MS upgrades, P4 3.0 ghz 2 gig ram traxxus, any details on the .htaccess file mods I am pretty ignorant when it comes to .htaccess. Maybe let me have a peak at the settings your using. Maybe others can also suggest mods I need to make to the file? BobS I dont know anything about NAT. The computer will be connected to the web using a cable internet access, it runs first through a cable modem then through a router that is both wired and wireless. Not sure right now if I will be running this computer with the wireless or with the LAN not sure if it matters. It would be nice to be secure enough I could register it on Google. The docs with the uniform server are really really good. It would be nice if we could develop instructions on taking the server online then how to secure it along with a HUGE disclaimer on the user getting hacked no doubt lol just step by step instructions to get us started then include key words and phrases for us to search the web and research further. Yes thanks much for The Uniform Server, I am no expert by far, my first home server was all done the old way, I found some pretty good DIY instructions on setting up your own server had to download and install each item then configure them all, took me a whole day to do what now takes me about 1 minute using The Uniform Server. Keep up the good work.

Any other thoughts on this I am currently running UniServer 8.0.0 on WinXP with all current updates would like to take it live on the web but not sure how to check and see if I have a big security leak, no doubt I am no match for the dumbest hackers lol Any step by step instructions for taking UniServer 8.0.0 live? VertrigoServ was/is the same way if you installed to "Program Files" with the space you had problems. The space thing is not a problem for me I just installed to C:\UniServer all is well.. Thanks for the latest update too

Yup I seen the 3.3 but like I said before with all the info on this thing spread out over 50 different locations ( every thing you click on takes you some place you dont recognize) I am so confused I really dont know what I am reading any more, I am sure this all makes sense to the author but their is no sensible flow to me. If it was mine their would be a single point of location for all the docs and a message board to communicate with, what more do you need, as with all wikis it would be deleted from the sever IMO it never should have been installed, NO wiki should have ever been installed its a total BS idea each time you go to a wiki info has changed you can never find something you had read in the past, anything more is just nothing but confusion and ore importantly aggravation. Ok I found it here is the page I read it on http://www.uniformserver.com/doc/index.html To get their I started up the server and loaded the page http://localhost/apanel/ Then on the menu to the left click on the "Uniform Server User Guide" then once that page loads on the left menu click on "Change Log " Thanks.

Current server I guess heck I dont remember now it was off the change log I was reading I cut and paste exactly what I was reading into my post above, so much info on the server is scattered in so many different places its impossible for me to remember exactly where I cut and paste it from, maybe it was form the admin page in the server? in the wiki? in the server docs? you got me I am sure the author of the change list knows right where to go. :-) If its been removed then it should only take seconds for the author to remove it. If I run across the list I took it from I will post the link. Thanks

Thanks for the reply it seems pretty advanced for me. I took a quick look at the mod_security2 apache module that looks like a pretty complex install for my skill level, any reason why its not already installed on the Uniform Server? Are their any open source programs that are like Harden-It ? After reading about Harden-It it sounds like something that should have came with XP heh Can you expand on the "US" I am not sure what your talking about. Thanks much for the reply.

Once we get our Uniform Server up and running and looking the way we want it, put together some sort of web page and web applications no doubt we will want to show it off to our friends and family members, but I worry about security holes and dont want someone from the outside (bots on the web) owning my computer system or snooping around my computer, is their some sort of testing software we can run on our web sites to see if we have any security issues? I was planning on running a web site off my home computer would it be more secure if I ran it in a Windows XP virtual machine, is their a way a hacker could access the data outside the virtual machine?
