I would suggest using the thread-safe version, since that's the variant that was being used in the 8.3 versions. I successfully upgraded to 8.3.20 with the technique described of overwriting the files, so it's not the 8.4 you mentioned, but 8.3 is still supported, so I'm not in a hurry yet. (I also sadly see a TON of spam in this forum.)
