Can't Get It Started

Hi, I'm a noob to Uniform Server so sorry if this is a lame ass prob. Wanted to try US as a quick and easy way to setup a dev enviroment.

I'm trying it on a W98 Second Edition box but it won't start.

First I downloaded UniServer3_2.exe, installed it to C:\UniServer3_2. When I run start.bat I get the message

 ERROR!!!
One of the instances of Apache server is started. Use stop.bat
.
Press any key to continue . . .

This box has nothing running except the bare minimum required to run the OS. Never the less I ran Process Viewer and confirmed nothing else was running.

Next I downloaded UniServer3_1.exe, installed it to C:\UniServer3_1. When I run start.bat I get the message

The disk  is busy. Use start.bat [disk letter]

I've tried the command line

start g

but the same message occurs.

Any ideas? Thanks.

First of, the recent version does not work on Win98 because of a bug we call, process32. We are currently working on fixing it and are close to a breakthrough.

Second, 3.1 should work on your system. Do you have a drive named W:/ already and also, try and restart the PC and run it.. just incase the problem was caused by 3.2 trying to start.

Thanks.

Hi, I've tried that and it's still the same. I have 4 physical drives C, D, E, F. All other drive letters are free.

Any other suggestions, earlier versions to try, etc?

Thanks.

No.. 3.1 has to work :D even if we have to force it down Windows throat :D (if it has one.)

Do you have any AntiVirus or Firewall software on your PC? Do you also use Skype? Do you know of any program that might be using or blocking port 80?

Thanks.

No, that box literally only has the kernel and shell running.

Anyway I've got 3.1 working. :D . I have to say "Excellent bloody job guys!". What a schweet no-brainer way to get a web dev enviroment up and running. "Every web developer and tech dude should have it!"

:D

The changes I made to the Win98 2nd edition box.

  • Removed MS PSDK enviroment vars from autoexec.bat
  • Changed: My Computer/Performance/File System/Typical role of this computer
    From: Network Server
    To: Desktop Computer
  • Defragged the swap file drive

Then it worked. I have to un-subst the W: drive by another cmdline tho'. The line in start.bat doesn't seem to work. :D The only mod I've done is change the Apache threads to 10. I aint having 250 threads on a 350Mhz, 128MB, Win98 test box :).

Besides that it's worked as smooth as a babys butt. Thanks again dudes, UniServer is da shit!
