Hi guys,
firstly, loving the product, very nice and simple. But as always I have a problem. My setup is:
  • Uniform Server 5.7.4-Nano
  • Windows Home Server SP2 (HP MediaSmart EX475 with the latest 3.0 update)
  • DD-WRT loaded onto my Netgear WNR3500v2 router
Port forwarding over port 80 is fine, I can access html pages fine from within the LAN and from the outside world via my own url using DynDNS. Everything is cool in that regard.

What problem I'm running into is setting my PHP file extensions either in a .htaccess file OR by the method documented here: http://wiki.uniforms..._Quick_PHP_Info

Neither seem to work. When I try the .htaccess method I get a 500 error, if I try the httpd.conf method nothing happens, I can still view the pages but PHP isn't doing it's thing. Also I'm not using short tags (<? ?>) but stock standard <?php ?> tags.

Any help would be awesome!
Thanks

When I have basic problems like this, I generally remember to drop back and check the installation.

First off, I'm not quite sure what you mean by "setting my PHP file extensions," since I've never needed to do anything related to this for any of my setups.

Secondly, remember that all the apanel, phpMyAdmin, and much other infrastructure use PHP. If these work, then you're probably trying to solve the wrong problem (or maybe I don't really understand it).

While the above tools are specifically blocked from use outside localhost or local net, you can override this temporarily with .htaccess entries. There are two of these: one in the home\admin subdirectory and the other in www.

Don't know if that's all clear, but at least we have the dialog started....
Regards,
BobS

Hey BobS,
sorry I wasn't too clear. My main goal is to have html pages be rendered as php pages. All of my html pages have some sort of php within them.

Tools such as phpMyAdmin work fine, it's just running html pages through the php parser that doesn't seem to work ;)

thanks

Try adding this line to UniServer\www\.htaccess
AddType application/x-httpd-php .htm .html
Note: Does not require a server restart.

Or edit file:
UniServer\usr\local\apache2\conf\httpd.conf
Replace this line:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .phtml .php3 .php
With
AddType application/x-httpd-php .phtml .php3 .php .htm .html
Note: Requires a server restart.

That's exactly what I've been trying to do but has been failing. Tried the .htaccess method in UniServer\www\ directory AND in the directory of the specific site I want this to work on. Neither worked ;) I've also tried the httpd.conf method and no dice either... this is exactly where I'm stuck.

Ok after some tinkering around I think I may have sorted this. Port 80 on my WHS firewall was only allowing traffic on the LAN, not on the greater WAN. When I enabled this for some reason the method described above started working.

While it's not a solid answer and it irks me that it just started working, it's working for now...

Ok no my previous post was wrong. I'm still having this problem, it's driving me nuts!

After further testing, whenever I have:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .htm .html
in my .htaccess file and open a page with some PHP code in it, I'm presented with a blank page. I view the source code from the browser too, but that is also empty.

Comment out
AddType application/x-httpd-php .htm .html
in the .htaccess file and all my pages load but none of the PHP renders.

Below is my httpd.conf file:

#############################################
### Uniform Server - Apache Configuration ###
#############################################
#
# This is a neat and pre-configured setting of Apache 2 for the
# Uniform Server.
#
#############################################
###  Apache Server Configuration - Notes  ###
#############################################
#
# Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
#	 whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
#	 of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
#	 same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths to avoid confusion.

### Section 1: Global Environment
#
# The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
# such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
# can find its configuration files.
#

# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#

ServerRoot "D:/UniServer/usr/local/apache2"

# ScoreBoardFile: File used to store internal server process information.
# If unspecified (the default), the scoreboard will be stored in an
# anonymous shared memory segment, and will be unavailable to third-party
# applications.
# If specified, ensure that no two invocations of Apache share the same
# scoreboard file. The scoreboard file MUST BE STORED ON A LOCAL DISK.

#ScoreBoardFile logs/apache_runtime_status

# PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
# identification number when it starts.

PidFile logs/httpd.pid

# Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.

Timeout 300

# KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
# one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.

KeepAlive On

# MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
# during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
# We recommend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.

MaxKeepAliveRequests 100

# KeepAliveTimeout: Number of seconds to wait for the next request from the
# same client on the same connection.

KeepAliveTimeout 15

### Section 2: 'Main' server configuration
#
# The directives in this section set up the values used by the 'main'
# server, which responds to any requests that aren't handled by a
# <VirtualHost> definition. These values also provide defaults for

# Note 1: The suffix does not have to be the same as the language
# keyword --- those with documents in Polish (whose net-standard

# avoid the ambiguity with the common suffix for perl scripts.
#
# Note 2: The example entries below illustrate that in some cases
# the two character 'Language' abbreviation is not identical to
# the two character 'Country' code for its country,
# E.g. 'Danmark/dk' versus 'Danish/da'.
#
# Note 3: In the case of 'ltz' we violate the RFC by using a three char

# Customizable error responses come in three flavors:
# 1) plain text 2) local redirects 3) external redirects
#
# Some examples:

#ErrorDocument 404 /missing.html
#ErrorDocument 404 "D:/UniServer/cgi-bin/missing_handler.pl"
#ErrorDocument 402 http:/D:/UniServer/www.example.com/subscription_info.html

# Putting this all together, we can internationalize error responses.
#
# We use Alias to redirect any /error/HTTP_<error>.html.var response to
# our collection of by-error message multi-language collections. We use
# includes to substitute the appropriate text.
#
# You can modify the messages' appearance without changing any of the
# default HTTP_<error>.html.var files by adding the line:
#
#   Alias /error/include/ "/your/include/path/"
#
# which allows you to create your own set of files by starting with the
# @exp_errordir@/include/ files and copying them to /your/include/path/,
# even on a per-VirtualHost basis. The default include files will display
# your Apache version number and your ServerAdmin email address regardless
# of the setting of ServerSignature.

### Section 3: Virtual Hosts
#
# VirtualHost: If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
# machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
# use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about
# IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.
#
# Please see the documentation at
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/vhosts/>
# for further details before you try to setup virtual hosts.
#
# You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host
# configuration.
# Use name-based virtual hosting.

#NameVirtualHost *

# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for requests without a known
# server name.
#
#<VirtualHost *>
#	ServerAdmin webmaster@dummy-host.example.com
#	DocumentRoot D:/UniServer/www/docs/dummy-host.example.com
#	ServerName dummy-host.example.com
#	ErrorLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-error_log
#	CustomLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-access_log common
#</VirtualHost>

NameVirtualHost *:80

#====== DEFAULT VIRTUAL HOST ===========
# LOCALHOST
<VirtualHost *:80>
  #ServerName doktoravalanche.org
  #DocumentRoot D:/UniServer/www
</VirtualHost>

### Section 4: Secure section

# Secure (SSL/TLS) connections
# Include conf/ssl.conf
#
# Note: The following must must be present to support
# starting without SSL on platforms with no /dev/random equivalent
#	   but a statically compiled-in mod_ssl.
#
#<IfModule ssl_module>
#  SSLRandomSeed startup builtin
#  SSLRandomSeed connect builtin
#</IfModule>

<IfModule mod_ssl.c>
  Include conf/ssl.conf
</IfModule>

If that is of any help?

Post a simple example page of the code you are trying to running.

What do you type in your browser to run this page.

Sure thing. So the live page is here: http://bit.ly/hVw24j Below is the code. Currently I have my .htaccess file looking like this:

#------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Server root folder www .htaccess
# This file provides server security limiting access to the localhost only.
# Comment next three lines to deactivate. (Allows external access)
#------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AddType application/x-httpd-php .htm .html
#Order Deny,Allow
#Deny from all
#Allow from 127.0.0.1

#------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# To allow execution of cgi scripts in this directory uncomment next two lines.
#------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AddHandler cgi-script .pl .cgi
Options +ExecCGI +FollowSymLinks

#------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Activate this section to use the Private Server Feature!
# Defaults: Username - root; Password - root
# Note AuthUserFile: File path is relative to server root
# To lock server, uncomment the next 4 lines. (A name and password is required)
#------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#AuthName "Uniform Server - Server Access"
#AuthType Basic
#AuthUserFile ../../../htpasswd/www/.htpasswd
#Require valid-user

Now to the page structure:

$pageOn = basename($_SERVER['PHP_SELF']);
//Compress page using gZip
//if (substr_count($_SERVER['HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING'], 'gzip')) ob_start("ob_gzhandler"); else ob_start();

This page works fine here http://www.rhysdjones.com <- Live site on a MediaTemple server, not hosted on my home server.

Thanks again for looking into this!

Oh! and in the apache error log are a lot of these lines:

Making either of the changes in my first post PHP is rendered in HTML pages.

Example code you posted I think contains errors!
I am no expert, removing <?php require_once("phpFlickr.php"); section, more of the page is rendered.

Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Ok this is just becoming madness and I suspect something else is at play here, I just can't put my finger on it.

So, this page does not render:
http://www.doktorava.../rhys/index.php

the code is:
<!doctype html>
<html>
	<head>
		<title>Rhys Jones - Designer, Photographer and Developer</title>
	</head>

	<body>
		<div id="wrap">
			  <?php echo ("hello world"); ?>
		</div>
	</body>
</html>

Now something I noticed is when I have
AddHandler cgi-script .pl .cgi
Options +ExecCGI +FollowSymLinks
Uncommented in the main .htaccess, the page is blank. If I comment out these lines I get a 403 Forbidden error. This happens for all pages that have any PHP code in them, EXCEPT for this page: http://www.doktoravalanche.org/test/ which was created fresh, as in I created a new directory within my www folder and created the new PHP file, etc.

Looking like a permissions thing with Windows. Sorry this is dragging out, but does anyone have any pointers? I've installed Uniserver on my D drive and my windows install is on the C drive, though I don't think this should have any effect since Uniserver is suppose to be portable.

thanks!
